Assign and Revoke VPP Licenses

You can assign VPP licenses manually in System Administration. A license assigned to a user lets the user install the app on all their devices. A license assigned to a device lets that device install the app without an Apple ID.

A licensed Device Application can also assign and revoke licenses automatically when it’s installed or removed. See Create a Licensed Device Application.

The licenses and users are in System Administration → Software Accounts → Apple Volume Purchase Programs, under your VPP account, in the Licenses and Users folders.

You assign licenses to users with the VPP buffers.

  1. Under Users, select one or more users, right-click, and select Add to buffer.
  2. Under Licenses, select the app and then one or more licenses.
  3. Right-click the licenses and select Paste from buffer. You’re asked: “Assign the selected licenses to the users in the buffer?”
  4. Enter a change description and click OK.

The licenses are assigned to the users. You can also work the other way: add licenses to the buffer, and then paste them on the users. Only users and licenses from the same VPP account are used.

To see what’s in the buffers, click VPP License buffer or VPP User buffer in the toolbar.

Device assignment works for devices with iOS 9 or later and for macOS devices.

  1. Under Licenses, right-click the app or one of its licenses, and select Assign to device….
  2. Search for the device, select it, and confirm the selection. Select only one device.
  3. When you’re asked to assign the license to the device, enter a change description and click OK.

A license for the app is assigned to the device’s serial number.

You can only revoke licenses that are assigned to a user or a device.

  1. Under Licenses, select the app and then the licenses to revoke.
  2. Right-click and select Revoke license.
  3. Enter a change description and click OK.

The licenses are revoked at Apple and become available for other users or devices.

To stop using a VPP user, right-click the user under Users and select Retire. Enter a change description and click OK. The user is retired in Apple’s Volume Purchase Program.

To see a user’s status, Apple ID hash, and invitation URL, right-click the user and select Properties.
