Adding External Tools

External tools let you start a program from the CapaInstaller Console with data from the selected unit, for example its computer name or IP address. You can configure tools for computers, mobile devices, and users. Each type has its own set of variables, based on the inventory collected for that unit type.

Add an external tool

1. Open System Administration.
2. In the top menu, select Tools → External Tools….
3. Click Add.
4. Enter a Name for the tool.
5. In Full path to the file, type the path to the executable, or click the browse button to select it.
6. In Arguments, type the arguments to pass to the program. Type $, or click the > button, to insert a variable.
7. Optionally, create or select a Category.
8. Select a Type: Computer, Mobile Device, or User. The default is Computer.
9. Click OK.

The tool is added to the External Tools list.

Tip

• Use categories to group related tools in a submenu.
• To add a tool that is similar to an existing one, select the existing tool and click Clone.

Variables

The variables available in Arguments depend on the tool type. When the tool runs, each variable is replaced with the value from the selected unit.

For Hardware Inventory and Custom Inventory, you first choose an inventory category and then an entry in that category.

Import and export tools

Click Export, choose a folder and a file name, and click Save to back up your external tools, including their configuration, to a file. Click Import to load tools from such a file, for example on another console.

Change the order of the tools

1. Select the Reorder mode check box.
2. Select a tool and use the up and down buttons to move it.
3. Click Save Positions.

The External Tools menu shows the tools in the new order.
